Philippians 4:15-20
For Givers Only
T heme
“But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” It is only to the faithful giver, that this promise is made.
S cripture Reading
Philippians 4:15 Now ye Philippians know also, that in the beginning of the gospel, when I departed from Macedonia, no church communicated with me as concerning giving and receiving, but ye only. 16 For even in Thessalonica ye sent once and again unto my necessity. 17 Not because I desire a gift: but I desire fruit that may abound to your account. 18 But I have all, and abound: I am full, having received of Epaphroditus the things which were sent from you, an odour of a sweet smell, a sacrifice acceptable, wellpleasing to God. 19 But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus. 20 Now unto God and our Father be glory for ever and ever. Amen.
R elating to the Scripture
Paul was very grateful to the Philippian church. After all, it was this church that had been so faithful to minister to his needs. Their ministry of giving was so complete that Paul said he was full; he was abounding in blessings. In addition, not only was Paul pleased with their support but God was well pleased. With these words concerning the pleasure of God came the promise that God would supply all of their needs. Take note that the needs are supplied to the ones who had given. This was not a blanket promise to supply all the needs of everyone. No, this promise is for givers only. Also, notice that these needs are supplied based on God’s ability not man’s. For Paul said these needs were to be supplied: “according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” What a comfort to know that we, the giving Christians, do not have to depend upon our own efforts, our own financial situation, nor the state of the economy here on this earth. Our dependence is upon the ability of God. And here our needs are met by God’s “riches in glory.”
O ffering Admonition/Confession
Our tithes and offerings are a direct connection to the abundance of God in our lives. For God has promised to supply all of our needs when we give.
