Proverbs 3:9-10
Honoring God With The First Of Our Increase
T heme
God is to be put first in every area of our lives. When we put God first in our giving, He promises that plenty of blessings will come bursting forth.
S cripture Reading
Proverbs 3:9 Honour the LORD with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase: 10 So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine.
Proverbs 3:9-10 Honor the Lord by giving him the first part of all your income, and he will fill your barns with wheat and barley and overflow your wine vats with the finest wines. (TLB)
R elating to the Scripture
According to Lawrence O. Richards , to honor someone “means to respect the person and to give him or her appropriate attention and obedience.” (Expository Dictionary of Bible Words, page 342) In applying this definition to this passage we are to give attention to and obey the Lord through the giving of the first part of our income. Giving must be a priority in our lives. If we fail to put God first in the area of giving, it is doubtful that God will have any place at all, where real obedience is concerned. In order to walk in obedience to God, we are to set aside God’s portion the first thing when we receive our income. Just like every command of God, when we obey wonderful blessings are the result. The promise for obedience in this passage has to do with having our barns filled with plenty and out presses bursting out with new wine. Recognizing this promise was made to an agricultural community, this blessing would be the equivalent of having our checking and savings account filled with plenty and our financial affairs bursting forth with profits. This great financial blessing is contingent upon giving God the first portion of our income. Today in the receiving of tithes and offerings, we have the opportunity to bring the reality of this promise into our lives. God has already told us what he will do when we put him first, the only thing that remains, is what we shall do. Being a people who are faithful to God we will put Him first in our giving.
O ffering Admonition/Confession
Today we have set aside the first portion of our income for God. We give that first portion through tithes and offerings. Because of this obedience, we have God’s promise of plenty bursting forth into our lives.
